Over the past week, Ben Affleck, most known for his acting career has gotten a lot of media attention after he appeared on the popular HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher. Maher and his guest Sam Harris had very strong views that liberals who lived in the West were not doing enough to stand up to radical Islamic beliefs. These included treatment of women and minorities; many of which would be prominent in many other religions too.
Harris said: “We have to be able to criticise bad ideas … and Islam right now is the mother lode of bad ideas.” This seemed to enrage Affleck who angrily asked: “How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to the store, have some sandwiches, pray five times a day and don’t do any of the things you’re saying?” adding: “It’s stereotyping”.
A very interesting debate to watch.
